Big Reed Nature Trails, Montauk County Park
Leaders: Ed Johann & Vicki Bustamante
Join us on a walk through Big Reed woods to learn and see spring ephemerals- wild geranium, wood anemone, trout lily, jack-in-the-pulpit, marsh violet, with ferns unfurling. Spring bird migration is underway and we’ll be looking to spot some remarkable species such as Scarlet Tanager, Great Crested Flycatcher, Rose breasted grosbeak, warblers, vireos, blue-gray gnatcatcher and others. Bring along your binoculars!
Special instructions: There may be some wet spots along the trails- hiking boots are recommended. Ticks are always an outdoor concern, please take tick preventive measures.
Directions: Take route 27 (Montauk Highway) through Montauk passing through town continuing east toward the lighthouse for a few miles (~4). Turn left (north) onto East Lake Drive (don’t make the mistake of turning too soon onto West Lake Drive!) Follow ~2 miles north, see sign for the Big Reed Nature Area on right, follow a short dirt drive into the parking lot. If you come to the airport you’ve gone too far.
