Oyster Pond is the highest quality example of a coastal salt pond community in New York State. The pond is the second largest pond in Montauk and lies partially within the Montauk County Park but mostly in the Montauk State Park and is in a completely undeveloped watershed. Due to its proximity to the shoreline, and by natural processes it periodically breaks open to Block Island Sound making it brackish and revealing a wide sandy shoreline favored by migrating shorebirds. We will walk down to the east and south shorelines and check out the birds, plants, and trees and along the way.
Directions: from downtown Montauk village continue east on Rt. 27 for 4 miles. Turn right onto Camp Hero Road, follow straight ahead and pull over and park on the right side of the road where we will meet.
Bring binoculars, tick precautions, water and a snack and wear sturdy walking shoes or boots.
